Research

  • Software engineering and algorithm design. I am the project leader and co-inspiration for a specialized algorithm development and software engineering package for image and data analysis tools (IDA). I am responsible for maintaining the team's MATLAB/C-based analysis package and guiding its growth. I assist in setting programming standards and provide user support. I also participate in algorithm development and programming.
  • Mixed-variable optimization. In collaboration with Mark Abramson and John Dennis, Jr., I have been exploring the use of mixed variable programming to solve restricted object class tomographic inversions. Object classes are defined by continuous, integer and categorical variables. Optimization schemes must reliably find global minimizers within rigid time constraints.
  • Special-application X-ray tomography. I am pursuing multiple aspects of providing quantitative interpretation of X-ray data for homeland security applications. Areas of research include detector response analysis, polychromatic forward measurement operators, total variation regularized tomographic inversion, object of interest location, subscene extraction, and corrections for scattering effects.
  • Image registration and warping. I am applying image registration techniques to obtain data comparison metrics from warping maps. Data of interest range from one-dimensional (e.g. a time series) and two-dimensional (e.g. an image) up to four-dimensional (e.g. movie of a 3D event). Data comparisons require robust and physically meaningful metrics, especially in settings of parameter estimation studies. Warping techniques are often used for these reasons but can be computationally and algorithmically challenging.
  • High-dimensional data analysis. I am researching ideas in the interpretation of images and other high-dimensional data. I consider image and shape measures leading to metric comparisons. I am interested in PDE-based image interpretation techniques for denoising and inverse operator regularization. I also consider data clustering using data-dependent metrics.
